Meghan Markle is out there breaking royal protocol again. No, she's not making her political opinions known, closing her own car door, or exercising a right to bare arms. She's wearing dark nail polish. No need to call Scotland Yard, but according to Hello Giggles, the dark varnish she wore to the The Fashion Awards 2018 in London on Monday night is going against an unofficial royal decree.

Meghan's goth nails were on full-display as she presented the British Designer of the Year, Womenswear award to Givenchy's Clare Waight Keller, the same designer who whipped up the Duchess's wedding dress back in May. Almost rebelliously, she called attention to her rule breaking digits with clangy gold bangles and a black single-shoulder gown which showcased her prominent bump. She finished the look with flat Tamara Mellon Karat sandals ($550).

Back in 2017, OK! magazine reported that it was inappropriate for royal women to wear any non-nude color on the nails. That would be why Kate Middleton and the Queen herself only ever wear baby pinks like Essie's Ballet Slippers ($9) — the color Meghan wore on her wedding day — and soft nudes. Meghan, a fan of dark nail polish before the whole becoming-a-princess thing, seemed to have gotten the memo because for a long time, she followed the rules. But not today!

While the awards ceremony wasn't an official royal event, she's representing the crown wherever she goes, whether it's to rub shoulders with Victoria and David Beckham (she was nominated for British Designer of the Year and he's an official ambassador for the organization) or visit the Commonwealth countries. Maybe the Queen will let this one slide?
