Meet InStyle’s Fashion News Director, Eric Wilson
This week, our new (and first-ever) Fashion News Director, Eric Wilson, joined the InStyle team. (And we're so beyond excited to have him!) First, we celebrated with a proper welcome fête atop the Skylark Lounge in New York City, and now, we're diving into the man behind that perfectly tailored suit.
Wilson’s impressive, style-centric career includes previous stints as a fashion reporter and critic at The New York Times, a writer for the "Month In Fashion" news column for W, and a staffer at Women’s Wear Daily, where he covered the ready-to-wear, fur, outerwear, and designer sportswear markets. Want to learn more about Wilson? Scroll down to find out who he thinks has the most enviable style in Hollywood, what he always packs in his suitcase, and whether or not he agrees with Coco Chanel’s rule on removing one accessory before you leave the house.
Tell us: How has your first week been going?Absolutely incredible. The InStyle staff has lived up to its reputation as the most gracious team in fashion. I’ve learned more than I thought possible in four days. And being inundated with flowers from designers around the world certainly makes a person feel special.
What's your favorite aspect of the InStyle brand?I most admire InStyle’s engagement with its reader, which is unparalleled in magazines, and also the irrepressible enthusiasm that editors here have for the subjects they cover.
What's one thing we don't know about you?I am insanely competitive on Words With Friends.
What can we find you doing outside of the office?I love reading cookbooks (and occasionally cooking), running, obscure dance remixes of pop songs from the late 1990s, and Scandinavian crime novels.
What's the most exotic place you've ever been?Bhutan, two years ago, for a hiking vacation. I just missed overlapping with Diane von Furstenberg and Christian Louboutin.
What are five things you always pack in your suitcase?A versatile navy blazer (Thom Browne makes one that is perfect), a stack of dress shirts (always including one white oxford), running shoes, La Mer's The Eye Balm Intense (erases all appearance of jet lag), and a corkscrew.
What is your go-to outfit when you want to look polished at work?A suit and tie if it’s a big day, but a well-tailored blazer will always do.
Which celebrities do you think have the best style in Hollywood?Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Beyoncé.
Which recent film do you love the costumes from? Blue Jasmine. Suzy Benzinger, the costume designer, nailed the socialite look right down to the perfect Chanel jacket and the Birkin bag worn as a shield.
What is the single most important item a woman can have in her closet? LBD. If I know what that means, then everyone should.
Do you agree with Coco Chanel's rule that before leaving the house, a woman should look in the mirror and remove one accessory? It’s not a bad idea. My personal rule is to remove at least one object from my bag so it’s not so heavy.
