Marvel Recasts Thor as a Woman—Which Actress Should Play Her on the Big Screen?
Thor just got a major makeover. The god of thunder has officially been recast in the comics, Marvel announced this week, and the next person to wield the superhero's mighty hammer on their pages is a woman.
Re-envisioning Thor, who is based on Nordic myth, as female is a major change for one of Marvel's "big three" superheros (Captain America and Iron Man are the others) and a bid by the comic powerhouse to increase their appeal to women and girls.
“The new Thor continues Marvel's proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more," Marvel editor Wil Moss said in a press release. "And this new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute—she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”
Along with the announcement, Marvel released this fierce-looking first image of the new character:
The female Thor will make her comic debut in October. And while Chris Hemsworth has proven his skills at carrying Mjölnir (the thunder god's hammer) in the Thor and Avengers movies, it's fun to imagine how a female version might translate to the big screen.
Which actress would you cast as the superhero? We thought one of these six ladies could triumphantly take the reins (based on the toughness they've shown in past roles).
