Marilyn Monroe Dress Auction - Lead 2016

Marilyn Monroe is quite possibly one of the most iconic and celebrated celebrities of the 20th century. From her memorable films like Some Like It Hot and The 7th Year Itch, to her famous fashion choices, Monroe is still a household name, even 50-plus years after her untimely death. So, it's no surprise that in an auction held by Julien's, which began on Thursday and will run through the rest of the weekend, many of Monroe's personal possessions and film costumes are selling for hundreds of thousands, and even millions, of dollars.

The most iconic of the items however, is definitely that famous, white sparkling dress she wore to John F. Kennedy's birthday, where she sang him a very sexy happy birthday, on May 19, 1962. The gown, from designer Jean Louis, originally cost $12,000 but was auctioned off on Thursday for a whopping $4.81 million, according to People.

The gown itself was so skintight and curve hugging that Monroe had to be sewn into it before her performance for the late president at Madison Square Garden.

Plenty of other memorable outfits were for sale in the auction, like the fringed cocktail dress she wore in Some Like It Hot, which sold for $460,000, and an elegant black gown she wore to the premiere of Rose Tattoo, sold for $125,000.

According to the auction house, the Happy Birthday dress now belongs to Ripley's Believe It or Not. The Julien's Auction still has plenty of Marilyn memorabilia for sale, including an annotated script of Gentleman Prefer Blondes, as well as baby pictures and childhood photographs of the star. Happy bidding, Marilyn fans!
