“Go big or go home,” whispered Margot Robbie’s BAFTAs dress moments before she stepped onto the red carpet, probably.

The Mary Queen of Scots star arrived at London’s annual film and television awards show on Sunday in a mermaid-cut Chanel Haute Couture gown with bold structured sleeves made of blue and black tulle, a matching skirt, and a dazzling bodice embellished with yellow, blue, and silver sequins, pearls, and stones. According to Vogue, the painstakingly detailed piece (which debuted in Paris just weeks ago) took 690 hours to create.

Countering the high drama of her gown, the Aussie actress wore her blonde locks in an elegant chignon, a peachy nude lip and pop of cobalt blue eyeliner decorating her dynamic face.

Granted not everyone was impressed with Robbie’s Chanel frock. Fans took to Twitter to compare the gown to any number of things, including a “car wash,” and “a flying fish” (?). Personally, I’m getting Wizard of Oz flying monkey vibes — like a really chic, talented flying monkey without any evil intentions.

Though the 28-year-old didn’t end the night with a gilded mask, it seems her gown has gone on to create a lasting legacy of its own.
