Looking Wicked Cool Is Easier Than Ever With MAC's Maleficent-Inspired Collection

Who knew being bad could look so good? Ever since her first appearance in the 1959 version of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent has been considered one of the most-glamorous -- and most-evil -- Disney villains. To celebrate the release of the 2014 reboot, which tells the story from the villainess' point of view and stars Angelina Jolie, MAC has teamed up with the film's makeup artists Rick Baker and Toni G. to create a 14-piece line inspired by the movie. "The collection of colors we chose were based around Old Hollywood, because Maleficent was from that time. In the Disney original, she was green with purple eye shadow, but because of the storyline, we decided to stick with neutral tones and a beautiful red lip," Toni G. tells InStyle exclusively. "We wanted to bring a sense of classic beauty that was also very sexy into the collection." MAC's lineup includes a one-size-fits-all shadow palette, liquid liner, brow pencil, nail polishes, faux lashes, and more. The trio of red lip products was actually used on Jolie during filming, and the finish would change to mirror what was happening in the plot. "Her lips would be either sheer and glossy, or opaque with the lipstick depending on the storyline," Toni says. "We probably went through about 20 different reds before we got to the final shade. The lipstick is great because you can wear the full-on red, or you can blot it down and make a stain."

Even if you identify more with the princesses than the villains, the classic hues won't come off too strong -- you just have to apply them correctly. "Just because you use one of the eye shadows, that doesn't mean you have to use the rest," says Toni. "If you're going to do the full Maleficent eye, start with the light-colored eye shadow as the base, and draw on your first layer of eyeliner, which should be at the base of your lashes -- get the dramatic shape using that, and build from there." Blend the hues in Carbon, Concrete, and Ground Brown to define the eye and emphasize the contour, just be sure to work in layers so you don't end up with a heavy, smoky effect. "The trick is to really pop your eyes and lips, and just be confident about it. The woman who wears this collection is confident, has classic tastes, but she's also a little dramatic," adds Toni. "The lipstick itself says 'Hello!' without you even having to do anything!"
