Our Lorde and savior unintentionally angered Whitney Houston fans on Thursday with a seemingly insensitive Instagram post.
The 21-year-old New Zealand native posted a photo of a bathtub with a caption borrowed from Whitney Houston’s (Dolly Parton’s, originally) mega-hit “I Will Always Love You.”
Given the circumstances of Houston’s untimely death—the singer was found submerged in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with drugs in her system back in 2012—Whitney’s fans took issue with the post, seeing it as a tone-deaf tribute at best and a cruel joke at worst.
Lorde, however, didn’t make the connection when she posted the photo. The “Royals” singer issued an apology on her Instagram story, writing, “Extremely, extremely poorly chosen quote. I’m so sorry for offending anyone—I hadn’t even put this together, I was just excited to take a bath. I’m an idiot. Love Whitney forever and ever. Sorry again.”
This isn’t the first time Lorde has inadvertently put her foot in her mouth. Last June, the songstress made waves in an interview with The Guardian when she seemingly compared her friendship to Taylor Swift with having a friend with “very specific allergies … having a friend with an autoimmune disease.” Again, she’s since apologized for the misstep, but we can’t help but find her apology tour eerily similar to that of another oft-attacked star, Lena Dunham.
Dunham happens to be a close friend of Lorde’s, as is Lena’s ex-boyfriend, Bleachers musician Jack Antonoff.
Rumors have circulated for some time about a Lorde-Jack Antonoff romance, but both parties have denied that their relationship is anything but platonic.
