In the July 2014 issue of InStyle, Kate Hudson talks about what we really want to know—ex-boyfriends, the paparazzi, plastic surgery, and the "circus" of Hollywood—no holds barred. The free-spirited blonde bombshell gets up close and personal about fame (something she has known all her life) and its realities.

She credits her mother, actress Goldie Hawn, for providing a stellar example of how to live a normal life and thrive through it all. "My mom was a trailblazer. She was one of the first women after Katharine Hepburn to produce her own films," says Hudson, who stars in Zach Braff's Kickstarter-funded film, Wish I Was Here, opening on July 18. "She had this extremely feminine public image, but behind the scenes there was a real, persevering strength—wanting to get things done, fighting for what she believed in, and being successful with it." Years later, our cover star hoped things would be more equal in the film industry, but she hasn't found that to be the case. "I don’t think it’s changed that much," the star states of women in Hollywood. "Do women still have a more difficult time in the industry? In terms of what they get paid and getting movies made, that’s just a factual yes. Nobody can debate it."

Spending most of her life in the public eye, Hudson has dated her fair share of celebrities. How did she react to former boyfriends Alex Rodriguez's and Lance Armstrong's doping scandals? "I was as shocked as anyone. But I personally think that you make the choices you make and you should reap the consequences," Hudson shares. "People have a right to [feel betrayed]. Lance and Alex are phenomenal athletes who have made some bad choices and let a lot of people down. It’s a decision they made for themselves and they’ve got to loathe it."

Another part of living in the Hollywood circus that Hudson has dealt with is the scrutiny of her looks, thanks to those pesky photogs following her every move. "I mentally cut their heads off," says Hudson. And on gossip bloggers' favorite game of "spot the plastic surgery," she has even stronger words. "The negativity is just so vast. Will everybody stop being so damned judgmental?" she says. "If someone wants to go get butt implants, then sure, go get butt implants. The real question is, How do they treat the person next to them? Are they a—holes or are they awesome?"
