Lacquer We Love: Chanel Blue Satin on Kerry Washington
While some may consider Kerry Washington’s metallic Mary Katrantzou gown one of the biggest fashion risks at this year’s Golden Globes, one thing we can all get on board with is that navy blue manicure.
Once the Scandal star gave celebrity manicurist Ashlie Johnson a peek at her dress’s color scheme, the two decided to play up the blue tones with a similar inky shade. First Johnson applied Chanel Base Protectrice Protective Base Coat ($26; chanel.com), which helped to prevent chipping and keep the dark hue from staining the nail beds. Then, she swiped on just one coat of the brand’s Le Vernis Nail Colour in Blue Satin ($27; bloomingdales.com). “I only used one coat of polish because I wanted to let a little light through so the shade would read lighter, rather than darker,” she tells InStyle.
Next, she applied two layers of top coat, using Chanel Laque Brillance Extrême Extreme Shine Nail Lacquer ($26; chanel.com) to achieve a smooth, shiny finish. A hint of glitter also gave plenty of dimension. “For the first application, I mixed the top coat with a little loose glitter, and then applied the top coat alone for more shine,” Johnson says.
