Kristen Bell and her husband, Dax Shepard, are proving that communication really is key. Bell recently explained that she and Shepard have "weed rules" and that she partakes in a little bit of recreational marijuana in front of him even though he's faced challenges with addiction.

She revealed the tidbit during an appearance on Marc Maron's podcast, WTF. People reports that while Bell may be best-known for her squeaky-clean Disney role and her time as gumshoe Veronica Mars (both of which set to be eclipsed with her excellent work on The Good Place), she and her husband often talk about drugs, even though he's been sober for the past 14 years.

Shepard has been drug-free for over a decade and that fact doesn't stop Bell from partaking in a little bit of weed, adding that she doesn't do it that often and that she and her husband have talked about it. In fact, she says that it's not like she's dangling a carrot in front of him, since he is recovering from addiction to alcohol and other drugs.

"He likes drugs and alcohol," Bell told Maron. "He's just aware that he lost his privilege with them because he can’t handle it. His brain does not have the chemistry to handle it."

Bell went on to explain that she vapes about once a week, when she's particularly tired and just wants to kick back with Shepard. Maron, who is a recovering addict as well, seemed intrigued at the arrangement, but Bell went on to explain that it wasn't that hard for Shepard. In fact, he's fine being sober around her.

"I like my vape pen quite a bit. I smoke around my husband and it doesn’t seem to bother him," Bell wrote. "Weed rules. Weed is my drug of choice, for sure."

Bell also added that Shepard is actually trying to arrange a night where she and her friends can experience other drugs, with him there as their "sober guide" to make sure nothing goes awry. Shepard recently celebrated his 14th year sober. Bell commended his valiant efforts on Instagram, writing about the struggles that they've experienced together and how proud she is of him.

"I will forever be in awe of your dedication, and the level of fierce moral inventory you perform on yourself, like an emotional surgery, every single night," she wrote. "You never fail to make amends, or say sorry when it’s needed. You are always available to guide me, and all of our friends, with open ears and tough love when its needed most."

On Thursday, Shepard replied to speculation that Bell's behavior might be triggering, comparing his experiences to that of a diabetic "expecting their partner to never eat dessert." To those people, he has two words: "Get real!"
