Kristen Bell may be wowing us now on the red carpet (e.g., her unforgettable Emmys dress), but back in the day, her enviable blonde locks weren't exactly the perfectly coiffed lob she has today.

During an appearance on the Late Late Show with James Corden Wednesday, the mom-of-two shared a photo of the baseball-inspired mullet she rocked as a kid. In the school snap, Bell is all smiles in a yellow dress with a red collar, in spite of what she considers an unfortunate 'do.

It turns out, though, that Bell had a good reason for sporting that cut. All credit went to her mom, who gave her the "disastrous" hairstyle to keep her from getting bullied while she played on an all-boys baseball team growing up.

"My mother made sure that I would not take any flack from anybody because she gave me a real sort of disastrous kind of haircut," Bell said. "What she did to make sure I fit in with the boys was took the bangs past the ear, past the forehead, past the ear all the way down to the back, which I believe we now call a mullet. I never had any problems because everyone thought I was one of the little boys. They're no longer bangs if you take them past the ear."

You've got to love moms.
