Kim Kardashian Opens Up About Her Struggle with Psoriasis
For better or for worse, we all know a great deal about Kim Kardashian these days, but every now and then, she'll reveal a little piece of herself that really resonates with us. Although she's been pretty candid about her struggle with psoriasis in the past, the star wrote up a post on her website and app today detailing her experience with the disease, which dates back to 2010 and was likely seen on a very special episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. "I got it for the first time at the DASH store opening in New York. I wore this all-sequin dress and I started getting really itchy," she wrote. "I thought it was just a rash caused by the fabric, but then the rash was COVERING my legs and my mom was like, 'I think you have psoriasis!' She has it too, and it's hereditary, so she spotted the symptoms immediately." Kim saw a dermatologist shortly after to address the flare-up, and now, a cortisone shot every few years helps keep it under control.
The star posted the above shot to her post, with the area in question on full display, and we have to admit—it's pretty humanizing. Stars, they're just like us, right? Although a cure for psoriasis hasn't been found just yet, Kim learned that cutting acidic foods like eggplant and tomatoes out of her diet can help prevent a flare-up, and she'll use a topical cortisone cream every night over the affected areas for added insurance. "I have that one patch on my right leg that is the most visible. I don't really even try to cover it that much anymore. Sometimes I just feel like it's my big flaw and everyone knows about it, so why cover it?" she adds. "I'm always hoping for a cure, of course, but in the meantime, I'm just learning to accept it as part of who I am." Respect.
