Kerry Washington Explains Why She Took a Social Media Hiatus Inside the New InStyle
Kerry Washington follows no one. This is true in life and on social media, where the Scandal star boasts 4 million followers on Twitter and 3 million on Instagram and follows not a one of 'em. "It's the Jay Z in me," she says inside InStyle's September issue, on newsstands Friday, April 12. (Mr. Carter also follows no one and yet has 3.2 million followers on Twitter and reportedly amassed 100,000 followers in 14 hours on Instagram before deleting the account.)
With numbers like that, its no wonder the soon-to-be mother of two needed to take a break from social media (she's since returned)."I started to feel overwhelmed, like there was too much noise," she tells Editorial Director Ariel Foxman. "I felt like I had to get back to who Kerry really is."
She then proceeds to detail the social media phenomenon we've all suffered from at one time or another: FOMO. "...That thing that happens in social media where you're comparing your day or your life or your food or your mood or your kids to somebody else's," she says. (Celebrities: They're just like us!) "I felt like I needed to create a little more stillness around me."
And what does she attribute this need for stillness to? "There's something about pregnancy," she says, "that willingness to take up more space in the world—that is liberating."
For more from the 39-year-old, including her candid thoughts on the state of the world today, pick up the September issue of InStyle, available on newsstands and for digital download Friday, August 12.
