Kelly Clarkson is the perfect person to judge a TV singing competition. She has sold tens of millions of albums, she has scored three No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and, importantly, she got her start on a TV show herself ... only NOT the one she will soon be judging.

Clarkson has been confirmed as a coach for Season 14 of The Voice even though the singer kick-started her career on the show's rival American Idol back in 2002. The unexpected match has had fans begging the question: Why not judge Idol instead?

In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Clarkson talked about why she signed onto The Voice and not American Idol.

“Let’s keep it real—I thought [Idol] was ending,” she admitted. “I’d already been in talks with The Voice ... and I gave them fifteen years! I was there every season!”

She has a point. Clarkson just recently got out of her Idol contract and during the past 15 years, she has regularly made appearances on the show.

So even though she won't be gracing the Idol stage anytime soon, we're pretty excited to have her on our TVs again.
