On this day, the fiercely independent and incredibly talented actress Katharine Hepburn would have turned 109. Throughout her career, Hepburn was regarded as one of Hollywood’s finest female entertainers. Today, she’s remembered for her iconic film work and complexity as both an individual and an actress.

In 2003, the star died at age 96. During her career, which lasted more than 60 years, Hepburn was nominated for twelve academy awards, four of which she won for best actress. Her best-known works include performances in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967), The Lion in Winter (1968), and On Golden Pond (1981).

Later, in 1999, Hepburn was named the greatest female star of Classic Hollywood Cinema by the American Film Institute—a well-deserved honor. Here’s to the actress on her birthday, in remembrance of her life, legacy, and incredible career.
