"I've never done a photo shoot like this."—#KateHudson on her @Campari calendar

The Italian spirit has been delighting taste buds for over 150 years, but it wasn't until more modern times they began producing their an annual high-concept, high-octane calendar.

Highly sought after by collectors, the annual calendars are not sold but distributed to Campari VIPs worldwide. Hudson joins the ranks of other A-list stars to serve as the cocktail calendar girl including Eva Mendes, Jessica Alba, Penelope Cruz, Uma Thurman, and 2015's Campari star, Eva Green.

Hudson was an obvious choice to star in the 2016 calendar; the Oscar-nominated actress is as sparkling and effervescent as a Campari cocktail, though the photoshoot was a major challenge for Hudson. "We're telling a story," Kate explained. "I've never done anything like that before."

This year's calendar will dovetail with an election year, so Campari was inspired to create a "Bitter Vs. Sweet" theme—a nod to the two very different types of cocktails you can create with Campari—with Kate playing both campaigning parts. "There's something very cheeky about it. The whole theme of this is really great. [We] tell this big story and I've got the sweet girl and the bitter girl," she said. "I've never done anything that is playing a character in a photo shoot. It's a completely different thing for me. I'm trying to emote a feeling and an action, but it's a still [photograph]. It's very ... how do I put it? It's sort of like, 'How many ways can you show a feeling with your eyes?'" If the behind-the-scenes photos we were able to get a sneak peek of are any indication of the rest of calendar, it's safe to say that Hudson slayed both the bitter and sweet characters.

Helping Hudson delve into the characters were a stage-full of incredible sets, theatrical lighting, and a fantasy wardrobe that included Versace, Vivienne Westwood, and more couture gowns in Campari's signature red shade. "When you're standing at a podium on a stage with a red Versace dress holding a Campari glass, you're like, 'Oh, okay. This is going to help the vibe.'"

Another perk of Hudson's calendar girl gig? A steady supply of yummy cocktails. "We had a whole drink tasting—which is one of my favorite things to do!" she said. "My favorite bitter one was the Negroni. It's just classic." To whip up your own Kate Hudson-approved Negroni, watch the video below. Cheers!
