The First Trailer for the Jumanji Sequel Reveals a Big Twist from the Original Film
It’s been over 20 years since Robin Williams’s beloved film Jumanji hit the big screen, and the much-awaited sequel has a bit of a plot twist from the original film. The first trailer, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Nick Jonas, dropped on Thursday, and man was it worth the wait.
The new film is called Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and it opens on four teenagers in detention who find an old video game in the closet. They choose their avatars and are surprised to discover themselves pulled into the game and transformed into the characters they chose.

The nerdy Spencer (Alex Wolff) becomes Dr. Smolder Bravestone (played by Johnson), while football player Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain) is transformed into the much smaller Franklin “Moose” Finbar (played by Hart). The bookish Martha (Morgan Turner) becomes Ruby Roundhouse (played by Karen Gillan), while the popular girl Bethany (Madison Iseman) is disappointed to find herself in the body of Jack Black’s Professor Shelly Oberon.
That’s right: Throughout the whole movie, the massive Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is playing a dorky teenage boy trapped in a hunk’s body, and Jack Black is acting as a popular teenage girl. Talk about a challenge.
Nick Jonas also appears briefly in the trailer as Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough, a character in the game who the teens encounter and can’t decide if they should trust. “Nick really embraced the jungle,” Black told Entertainment Weekly. “Like, Nick Jonas would disappear for a few days and just be on a real physical adventure. He’s come back with bumps and scrapes and bruises and a big smile on his face because he’d traversed some impossible mountainscape and came down the other side of the mountain on like a zipline.”
Mark your calendars. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle hits theaters Dec. 20.
