J.K. Rowling Responds to a Fan's Heart-Wrenching Request with a Magical Flick of Her Pen
J.K. Rowling is a magical creature. On Wednesday a Harry Potter fan named Kate shared an open letter with the author on Twitter, identifying herself as a survivor of sexual assault, bullying, and multiple suicide attempts. "I know you won't judge, that's why I'm telling you this," she wrote. "Another reason why I'm telling you this is [because], through all the downs in my life, [you] helped me get through every single thing one way or another!"
Kate shared that she's trying to stop self-harming, and requested that Rowling write the spell for the Patronus Charm ("expecto patronum") in her handwriting so she could get it tattooed on the wrist as a reminder to herself. "I know that's gonna help me stop even if it takes a while," she added. "Please, Jo. I know I can slowly start to recover, but I need your help to do so."
Being the beautiful human that she is, Rowling replied to the request in less than 10 minutes and shared a photo of the spell (which translates from Latin into "I await a protector") written in gorgeous, sprawling script along with a heartfelt message. "I love that you're working to heal and protect yourself," she wrote. "You deserve this. I hope it helps."
Ugh, our hearts! We're hopeful this little piece of magic from her idol helps Kate win the battle against her dementors.
