Jessica Biel on Total Recall: 'I Wanted to Look Rougher Than Kate Beckinsale'
Total Recall opens today! The not-slowing-down-for-a-second remake of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1990 futuristic adventure stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and our August cover girl Jessica Biel. And fun fact: With two strong women as the kick-butt leads, Biel worked closely with costume designer Sanja Milkovic Hays to make sure she set herself apart from her lookalike co-star on the big screen. “We were really trying to create a really different look between the two of our characters because we sort of resemble each other and our hair is a similar color and everything,” Biel told us at the InStyle-hosted New York premiere of the film last night. “My character was really someone coming from this underground army, the streets. I wanted a bit of a rougher, more street-like quality to her. They don’t have the government supplying them all these things that [Kate’s] character probably does have.” As a result, Biel’s “Melina” wears loose army cargos, layered tanks, and leather jackets, while Beckinsale’s “Lori” punches, dropkicks, and shoots in stretch body-con pants and tight tops. “She was literally sewn into those things,” Biel said of Beckinsale’s wardrobe. “My pants are really loose, and I actually did that on purpose so I could actually move comfortably. It was so important for me.” See, it doesn’t matter whether you’re on at work, weekending, or portraying a resistance fighter from the future like Biel—comfort is always key.
