Two of Hollywood’s biggest stars—and earners, for that matter—are taking on the career-making role of Zelda Fitzgerald.

In a plotline worthy of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett Johansson will both be playing the late author’s ill-fated wife in separate upcoming productions, potentially pitting the two against one another when it comes to box office and critical analyses.

The schizophrenic jazz age icon has recently regained the public’s fascination, giving life to several portrayals, including Christina Ricci’s turn as Fitzgerald in the Amazon series Z: The Beginning of Everything.

Lawrence’s foray into the life of the "first American flapper," Zelda, boasts the directorial prowess of Ron Howard, while Johansson’s project, The Beautiful and the Damned has yet to assign a director.

Zelda, adapted from the novel of the same name, promises to explore the breadth of the literary muse’s life. Johansson’s film will examine similar themes and events, but also brings a new facet to the tale of Fitzgerald—according to The Hollywood Reporter, the production will incorporate “newly unearthed transcripts from a sanatorium in which Zelda Fitzgerald was confined that indicate her husband misappropriated his wife's ideas as his own.” Intriguing, indeed.

Both biopics sound fascinating—and we know these two talented actresses will give the role their all.
