Jane Birkin Auctioned Off Her Namesake Hermès Bag for Charity!

Jane Birkin, Hermes

Jane Birkin auctioned off her Hermès Birkin bag (yes, the original) to benefit earthquake relief efforts in Japan! The worn-in purse, which Birkin decorated with stickers and talismans from her travels, fetched £100,100 on eBay this weekend—or about $162,840 at the current exchange rate, and all of the proceeds will go to the British Red Cross. "It’s very nice that everyone’s got one or wants one," Birkin told Vogue. "I keep saying to Hermès to make it out of plastic or, even more fun, make it out of cardboard. Then it wouldn’t be so heavy." That's one way to shorten the wait list for the sought-after style!
