In his latest film, Stronger, Jake Gyllenhaal takes on the role of Jeff Bauman, a real-life victim of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Bauman headed to the sidelines of the marathon to cheer on his ex-girlfriend, portrayed by Tatiana Maslany in the film. After the bombs exploded, he lost both of his legs in the attack. As we learned from the touching and deeply emotional trailer, the movie follows his journey through recovery, both physical and emotional. Gyllenhaal absolutely kills his performance, making us connect with the real life character as though he were a close friend or family member. He cries. He screams. He considers giving up. He gets into a fight Maslany. The trailer defines drama. Toward the end, Andra Day’s “Rise Up” plays as he gets used to his prosthetic legs and begins to get better. All in all, it’s one we’ll have to watch with a box of Kleenex nearby.
