Idris Elba's 16-Year-Old Daughter Will Have an Important Role at this Year's Golden Globes

The Elba family has plenty to celebrate. Fresh off Idris Elba snagging People's Sexiest Man Alive Honor for 2018, his daughter, Isan, is getting an accolade, too. She's just been announced as 2019's Golden Globe Ambassador, which will see her handing out the awards during next year's telecast as well as performing other duties throughout the year.

Isan,16, is Idris's daughter with his ex-wife, Hanne Norgaard. Though she's a teen, she's no stranger to the spotlight, having accompanied her dad to the Oscars as well as multiple red carpet premieres. From the looks of her Instagram, they have quite a close bond.

“My daughter and I speak about having the confidence to believe in your own journey and not to follow others,” Idris told Essence in 2016. “We speak about that a lot — confidence and belief, and not following anyone else’s shine, but rather following your own shine.”

Since last year, Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been calling the position the Golden Globe Ambassador, moving from the gendered Miss and Mr. Golden Globe. Starting in 1971, the honor has gone to a celebrity child selected by the HFPA president.

Past appointees have gone on to do big things — so it's not a position that's taken lightly. Dakota Johnson and Melanie Griffith have both held the title, as has Laura Dern. And here's a fun fact: Freddie Prinze Jr. did, too. But he's not the only male to have the distinction. Past Mr. Golden Globes include John Clark Gable, son of Clark Gable and Kay Williams Gable, and AJ Lamas, son of Lorenzo Lamas and Michele Smith.

According to Refinery29, there's a lot of pomp and circumstance around the position, which is supposed to highlight Hollywood's next generation. With the glitz and glam comes real work, however.

"You have to give the winner the award and then move them to this mark. Then you have to move everyone off the stage and behind a wall," Mavis Spencer, 2010's Miss Golden Globes and the daughter of Alfre Woodard, said. "You're running the show a little bit — it's not just standing there being a pretty face. It isn't as easy as you think, especially after the actors have gotten a few drinks into them."

There's no paycheck for the gig, either. Perks of the job do include being able to attend the events leading up to the big night, however. Being in the shadow of names like Laura Dern and Linda Evans may seem like a monumental task, but something tells us that Elba's up to it.
