Many of our favorite musicians, like Katy Perry and Rihanna, have gone on to pursue non-musical endeavors, such as clothing lines, perfumes, and accessories. Few, however, have tackled the restaurant industry. Emily Saliers, one half of the famous folk-rock duo Indigo Girls, chose the road less traveled, co-opening an eatery in Atlanta dubbed Watershed on Peachtree. (The restaurant first opened as Watershed in 1999 in Decatur, Ga., and moved to its Atlanta location in 2012.) Serving local, seasonal Southern dishes, the restaurant is helmed by executive chef Zeb Stevenson and has even earned a prestigious James Beard Award.

“Both cooking and songwriting are creative endeavors,” Saliers tells InStyle. “There are elements that must be brought together to make something great. Both food and music stir the senses and connect people.” The “Closer to Fine” songstress, whose favorite dish to cook is pasta (“like spicy shrimp spaghetti!”), prefers to enjoy both of her passions simultaneously by rocking out to tunes while whipping up a meal. “I like some upbeat and some mellow songs on my cooking playlist, and I like music from other countries and cultures,” she says. “With a great vibe, I even feel like doing the dishes!”
