At this time of year, I am instinctively drawn to metallic clothing items and accents—it must have something to do with the upcoming holidays! Adding a gold or silver piece to a neutral ensemble is also a smart day-to-evening strategy. I have a matte-gold, sequined tank top I bought years ago that I love to layer under a cozy cardigan or blazer to up the ante.

In general, gold looks great with warmer colors such as camel, brown, wine, and olive, while silver is the perfect foil for cooler shades such as grey, navy, and pastels. Both play beautifully with black and winter white. A metallic shoe or bag is also a wise investment, since it will work with a wide range of colors.

Whether you can wear two metallic items at the same time really depends on the size of the garment or accessory. If you are wearing a silver trench, for example, I would stay away from any other silver accents. But if you have, for example, a black skirt with gold metallic trim, you could certainly pair it with a gold shoe or bag.

As for jewelry, it’s easier—but not necessary—to match. You may not need much (if any!). Again, it all depends on scale. If you are wearing something that makes a big statement, such as a metallic dress, you might just want a tiny earring. If your outfit is neutral except for a gold or silver bag, you can be bolder with your jewelry.

Think of metallics as a “texture” that can liven up matte fabrics such as tweed, wool, cashmere, suede, and denim (instead of as a dressy evening material) and you will see many more ways to wear them.
