Here's How to Recreate Elizabeth Banks's Modest Red Carpet Makeup
Dramatic makeup can be fun, but Elizabeth Banks proved that less is always more, as she stepped out for the Sundance Film Festival. Her makeup artist for the event, Kerri Urban, explained exactly how she created the natural look, and it was perfect for the multihyphenate star's busy schedule.
Urban explained to InStyle, "She had a long day of press and didn’t want to have to worry about a statement lip that she’d have to keep touching up." So they went with a strong eye and neutral lips.
Great makeup starts with great skin. Urban combined Juara Radiance Vitality Oil ($65; birchbox.com) with Juara Sweet Black Tea and Ginger Moisturizer ($55; dermstore.com) to prep for foundation. Both formulas are filled with natural extracts that nourish the skin. "After I combined the blend to her face, I let it sit for about two minutes."
To create an even base, Urban smoothed on Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($62; sephora.com). The lightweight formula is perfect for achieving silky undetectable coverage.
The pro then moved on to the star's eyes, which were the focal point of this look. "We decided to create a purple-brown daytime smoky eye that would make her eyes pop." To even out her lids, Urban swiped "the lightest cream color from the Votre Vu Palette Play in Nude ($42; votrevu.com)." Dimension was created using "the dark burgundy-purple shade from that palette," which was dusted into the outer corners of her eyes. To soften the look, the pro suggests blending the deep hue in toward the middle of the lid. Votre Vu Le Joli Crayon in Carbon ($23; votrevu.com) was swiped along the lash line to further bring out her eyes.
"The secret to pulling off a smoky eye is to keep everything else light and fresh." So the expert added a subtle flush of color to Banks's cheeks with Votre Vu Vu-On Rouge in Bouquet Rose ($29; votrevu.com).
Last, but certainly not least, Urban created that perfect nude lip. The key to making the flesh hue last throughout the day is to layer on the color. "First, I lined her lips with the Votre Vu Dramatic Lip Liner in Spark ($21; votrevu.com), then I applied Votre Vu French Kiss lipstick in Loulou ($23; votrevu.com), and finished with Votre Vu Lip Lustre in Tender ($22; votrevu.com)."
