How InStyle’s Executive Stylist Shops for the Holidays
Tackling the challenge that is holiday shopping can be a daunting one, but InStyle’s Executive Stylist Dana Avidan-Cohn has it down to a science. We teamed up with Bulova to take some notes from this gift-giving guru, while picking up a few shopping tips to put a little more merry into your holiday season.
8 AM: RISE ‘N’ SHINE
“During the winter, I like to go running outside whenever it’s warm enough. Starting my day off exercising is a way to clear my mind and get energized. It leaves me fresh and alert, while helping to set my intention for the day.”
Shopping Tip #1: If possible, take a personal shopping day to tackle your to-do list. You’ll feel less rushed if you carve out some time for yourself, and will make for a much less stressful afternoon.

10 AM: MAKE A LIST; CHECK IT TWICE (OR THREE TIMES)
“New York City can be chaotic, especially during the holidays, so I like to give myself some time in a relaxing space to enjoy my morning coffee. The Standard Grill is one of my favorite breakfast spots in the city, and is the perfect place to organize my thoughts and solidify my holiday shopping list.”
Shopping Tip #2: Beat the holiday frenzy by shopping during the middle of the week. You’ll avoid the weekend crowds and save yourself the headache.

11 AM: SHOP FOR THE LITTLE THINGS FIRST
“Nowadays, people seem to exclusively shop online for their holiday gifts, but there’s a certain satisfaction about going into a store to touch the product and speak with the merchants. Chelsea Market is one of my favorite places to shop for unique gifts. Gifting your loved ones more personalized tokens is like a hand-written note – antiquated, but a more memorable gesture.”
Shopping Tip #3: Leave the big handbag at home on your shopping day. Take a small clutch or a cross-body bag to avoid carrying an additional item and free up your hands.

2 PM: BIGGER IS BETTER
“The holidays are a beautiful time in the city, and the department stores put such an effort into getting you excited for the season with their display window decorations. If your shopping list is a lengthy one, going to a department store can be a real time saver. The stores double up on sales associates, so they can help you find what you’re looking for quickly.”
Shopping Tip #4: Wear layers when shopping. Stores can get hot and it can get uncomfortable if you can’t shed your separates.

5 PM: JINGLE & MINGLE
“After a day of doing things for other people, it’s nice to plan something fun for yourself to recalibrate. The SixtyFive Bar & Cocktail Lounge at the top of Rockefeller Center is an iconic New York City rooftop with incredible views of the skyline. When you live in New York, you sometimes forget to take advantage of these places that people from around the world make a point to come visit.”
Shopping Tip #5: Be sure to wear comfortable shoes that you can easily translate into a merry happy hour. Holiday shopping may be painful, but your feet should never be.
