And this year's show didn't disappoint. Although there were a ton of standout dresses, Chrissy Metz's head-to-toe red outfit gets our award for best monochromatic look. The This Is Us star and her stylist Penny Lovell took being matchy-matchy to the next level by pairing her custom Tanya Taylor dress with coordinating custom Stuart Weitzman shoes and clutch in the same shade of red. Plus, ruby Neil Lane earrings. And the fun didn't stop there. Metz's glam team stayed true to the color theme, too. Metz wore a deep matte red lip and a leftover bead from her dress in her hair. But, the star's manicure really stole the show. Instead of using glitter to add an accent to red nails, Lovell gave Metz a sparkly nail ring by Stefere. Lovell tells InStyle that her and Metz began working with designer Tanya Taylor a couple of months ago, with the first fitting of the rough cut of the dress taking place in December. The Best Beauty Looks from the 2019 Golden Globe Awards "She’s cool and loves modernity and fashion," Lovell says of working with Metz. "Its fun to work with designers to push envelope with what people are used to seeing, and Metz looks fantastic! Representation is key, so it's great to see her out looking bold and sassy." Lovell tells us that her and Metz come up with a color or an idea for a dress and it grows from there. "A great of her [Metz's] are custom so we create them. We do have a lot of freedom, and we come up with a color," she explains. "We are loyal and like to work with people that always like to work with us. For something like this, it felt very Tanya [Taylor] to me." We went behind the scenes with Powell and Metz on Globes day to see how the final look came together. Glam Time Penny Lovell Lovell tells InStyle that getting Metz ready for the red carpet is always a big group effort. "We all talked in advance ahead of the show," she says. "We decided on big hair and I thought a darker red lip would be nice since we were going on for a full on red look. The hairstylist [Marc Mena] put a bead a leftover bead in her hair at the last minute!" 02 of 07 Red Shoes Made For Walking A Red Carpet Penny Lovell An allover red awards show look wouldn't be complete without a matching pair of shoes and bag. Lovell says that Metz suggested adding a few leftover beads from her dress to her custom Stuart Weitzman shoes and clutch. 03 of 07 A Few Ruby Jewel Options Penny Lovell A casual assortment of ruby jewels that Lovell pulled for Metz to accessorize her look. Lovell and Metz decided on a pair of killer Neil Lane earrings. 04 of 07 Put A Ruby On It Penny Lovell Metz's hairstylist Marc Mena added a leftover bead to the star's half-up half-down hairstyle. The small detail tied the red look together even further. 05 of 07 One More Touch Up Before Hitting The Red Carpet Penny Lovell Making sure Metz is ready for her closeup on the red carpet, and you know, presenting. 06 of 07 Nail Bling Penny Lovell No, that's not glitter polish or a press-on nail. That is a nail ring by Stefere on Metz's pinky finger. "I just found it the other day," says Lovell of the ring. "I was like, 'what is that?' I had never seen a ring lilke that before, and I’ve seen a lot of jewelry." Same Lovell, same. And now we need one. 07 of 07 The Final Look Penny Lovell Lovell says that the best part of working with Metz during awards season is seeing the final look come together. "The best moment is when she walks out in the dress and you see it all come together," Lovell says. "I’d seen the dress on her a bunch of times when it was getting tailored, but it's not the same. It’s a lot of work, and then in that one moment you see it come together."
