Fashion leggings are a staple in almost every girl's (and some guys'—looking at you Russell Brand!) closet. But when you put on your comfiest go-to black leggings and best cable-knit sweater, you may not realize how far leggings have come throughout the years.

Audrey Hepburn first rocked leggings when she was cast as Jo Stockton in the musical film Funny Face all the way back in 1957. The black second-skin look was duplicated on runways, in workout videos, on stage, and most of all, in street style that we are still seeing today. Olivia Newton-John took the leggings look to the next level in the last scene of Grease in 1978. The actress's sexy, shiny tights made quite a stir, and had girls everywhere looking to duplicate the look.

During the '80s, rockstars like Debbie Harry and Madonna rocked the tight pants onstage and proved that Lycra-infused comfort will always play a huge role in style. Today, leggings have made a huge comeback as a laid-back alternative to regular, structured pants. Just take Kendall Jenner's off-duty style as chic evidence. Certainly we're not complaining!
