You could say former Victoria’s Secret Angel Heidi Klum knows a thing or two about being nearly nude in public. From her love of topless sunbathing to her expertise rocking lingerie down the runway, Klum has made a living by confidently showing off her incredible figure.

It makes perfect sense that the next step for this supermodel was creating a line of lingerie, Heidi Klum Intimates, and then venturing into the world of bikinis with her new collection, Heidi Klum Swim. At the N.Y.C. launch of her new line, now available at Bloomingdales and heidiklumintimates.com, the star told InStyle her clever trick for always feeling confident in her swimwear. Hint: If you’re buying online, make sure you have the option to exchange it.

“I think you definitely have to try everything on before and really twirl around in front of the mirror, because when you go and hit that beach, then you’re on the beach. You don’t want to cover up and you want to have fun,” she said. “So if it’s too small and you’re like, ‘I wish I would have gotten that bigger size,’ or, ‘Why am I hiding so much? I wish I would have gone for the smaller one.’ I think you really, when you try it on and you go into the dressing room, really look at yourself from all angles. You have to feel really good in it.”

It sounds simple, but it’s so true. After all, how much time do we really spend in our new bikinis before wearing them out? “When you go to the beach, that is the closest place of being nude in public that you could possibly be,” Klum reminded us. “You wouldn’t walk around here on the street and do this, but when you’re on the beach, you take your clothes off and you’re there in your little bikini, so you should feel good in it.”

Another essential to feeling good in a suit is picking one that you love, and Klum has worked hard to make sure she’s offering a large range of options. “I tried to design with every woman in mind,” she told InStyle. “I want to be the go-to place for women. I want to be that brand that, you know, a woman will know, ‘I will find something there. There’s always something in Heidi’s range that will be great for my body.’”

“So I have one pieces, you know, little triangle bikinis, bigger bottoms, bigger tops. It varies from an amazing, fit, great basic to a wild bedazzled, itsy bitsy teeny weeny triangle bikini. You know how certain brands, they only do wild things or they only do basics? I wanted to have a range from the basics to the wild and crazy bikinis as well.”

Her final tip for confidently hitting the beach? Get in your cardio. “Running is always good, and staying away from the spaghetti Bolognese.”

Well, easier said than done.
