It may not be officially winter, but when temps plummeted in some parts of the country over the weekend, it sure felt like it. To prep against the impending chill and sub-zero forecasts headed our way (hey, we can't all be in denial), we scouted for our favorite knit beanies to help us brave the cold from now until spring.

But why beanies? Well, unlike other cool-weather accoutrements, like leather baseball caps and wool wide-brim hats, beanies have the tenacity to withstand billowing gusts of wind. And unlike fur trappers, they also offer warmth without the risk of overheating. And to top it off, they deliver a degree of casual-cool nonchalance that anyone can pull off.

We started with the fall/winter 2014 runways for inspiration—Tommy Hilfiger's chunky knit pom pom beanie was the first that came to mind. From there, we recruited playful prints, like Stella McCartney's trippy pied-de-poule pattern, and high in-demand styles, like the one from the DKNY x Cara Delevingne collaboration. Finally, we mixed in timeless pieces, including basic marled knits to soft angora-blend neutrals. From statement-makers to classics, we found the chicest beanies to suit every style.
