It’s all about Hamilton at tonight’s Tony Awards—and with 16 nominations, it’s no surprise that those involved with the hit hip-hop musical are taking a moment to truly appreciate its unprecedented success.

InStyle caught up with the show’s costume designer, Paul Tazewell, right before he headed inside for the award ceremony—and subsequently took home the award for Best Costume Design of a Musical—and he revealed his initial reaction to hearing that Hamilton was up for so many awards.

“I thought, well-deserved!” said Tazewell. “It’s fantastic—I would say that everyone involved with Hamilton doesn’t take it for granted.” The cast and crew are all aware of how special it is to be a part of such an experience. “I think we all know that success comes in many different ways, and the media attention can be timed to trends,” said Tazewell. “It lasts as long as people are interested. So, you know, there may indeed come an end at some time—and I think we’re all trying to enjoy it as much as possible while it’s going on.”

As for what he and the rest of the Hamilton team have planned following tonight’s big wins? “We are gonna celebrate,” said Tazewell. “It’s been a few months of biting our nails, and it’s also been very, very busy. It’s all been wonderful—but I think we’re all ready to take a nap!”
