The Good Wife Work Outfit Inspo of the Week: Pick a Coat with Color
This season, The Good Wife’s costume designer Dan Lawson is exclusively giving InStyle tips for what to wear to work, inspired by the characters’ ensembles on the show.
It's getting cold outside! And while we're bundling up in warm gear, so are our favorite TV characters, as seen on this week's episode of The Good Wife. "There were three coats in the episode I just loved," said the show's costume designer Dan Lawson. "And it's because they're not black! They have color and command interest, while still looking elegant."
His picks for each character are indicative of their personalities: Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) wore a maroonish-purple style that had a self tie and black collar and cuffs by Akris (a brand she wears often). "This coat was sleek and the black touches really popped the color of the body," said Lawson.
Meanwhile, Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) chose a double-faced cashmere tan design by Donna Karan. "The large collar framed her face beautifully and the full body gave a nice swing to her walk," Lawson explained. For guest star Connie Nielsen, who plays lawyer Ramona, Lawson gave her a pale pink soft wool overcoat by Martin Margiela. Said Lawson, "I thought this was just the height in classic elegance."
Your tip: "Don't get bogged down in only wearing black and navy blue coats as we head into the wintry months ahead," said Lawson. "There are wonderful colors out there that are beautiful and chic. Wearing a coat with a pretty hue will put an extra 'spring' in your step as you trudge through the cold winter."
