On-screen and on the red carpet, Helen Mirren without a doubt knows how to shine. One such example is the 70-year-old actress’ radiant complexion that was just as luminous as her embellished Jenny Packham champagne gown she wore to the 2016 SAG Awards.

Just how does the Oscar and Golden Globe winner do it? InStyle spoke with Mirren’s makeup artist, Robin Fredriksz to find out how she got the English actress’ complexion red carpet ready.

Fredriksz began prepping Mirren’s skin for the night by applying a couple of generous drops of SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum ($270; to Mirren’s crow’s feet, nose, laugh lines, and neck. Next, Fredriksz used SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator ($178; all over Mirren’s face to smooth any fine lines and create an even palette. Finally, to reduce dryness and treat the sensitive under eye area, Fredriksz applied SkinMedica TNS Eye Repair ($98; combined with concealer to Mirren’s under eyes. Fredriksz let the products soak into Mirren’s skin for around ten minutes before applying makeup.

To keep Mirren’s complexion center stage, Frediksz kept the actress’ makeup clean and simple, with a soft, gray smoky eye, light flush, and muted lip using a pencil. Once the makeup was set, Fredriksz completed the look by applying another small amount of SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator to Mirren’s skin over the makeup for an extra boost of luminosity. “I take a moisturizer or hydrator with my fingertips and pat it over the makeup to bring out the luminosity in the skin,” Fredriksz said of her technique. “Skin that reads like skin with a nice, glowy finish is what makes you look young and fresh.”
