For those of you who have never witnessed a red-carpet event, it can be pretty overwhelming. “I used to get so nervous about walking red carpets,” admits Brie Larson, who spoke to InStyle while promoting her new film The Gambler in New York City. “The photographers yell at you, and you can’t see anything!”

Lately though, Larson has found herself embracing the experience thanks to a newfound love of fashion. “In my day-to-day life I’m not really one to get dressed up or put on makeup, so I’m finding that it’s such a fun time to play dress up,” she says. “I’m learning that the power of the right outfit can totally change your perception and confidence level.”

Gravitating towards pieces with structure and detail, Larson tends to steer away from dresses that may reveal too much. “I don’t like wearing things that make me feel too exposed or vulnerable,” Larson continues. “I tend to go for things that feel heavier and are like armor.”

Case in point: The structured Louis Vuitton dress (above, left) she wore to the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and the Prada dress (above, center) she wore to the Begin Again premiere. “I really love Prada and I really love Louis Vuitton. I think their stuff is really smart and textured and well made. Those are the [designers] I have been wearing recently.”

However, Larson mixed it up for the N.Y.C. premiere of The Gambler wearing Rodarte (above, right) for the occasion. “I liked that dress! I’d never worn anything like that,” she says. “My mom was with me and she had never seen me in a dress like that because since I was homeschooled I didn't go to prom.” She's certainly making up for it now!
