Looking Back: The Funniest Emmy Host Moments Throughout the Years
It's that time of year again, the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards are almost upon us and we are so excited. The amazing red carpet, all of our favorite TV stars in the same place, Jimmy Kimmel with a potential to be even better than his 2012 stint as host—so much is going to go down on Sunday night and we cannot wait.
In honor of this year's Emmy Awards, and especially Kimmel's return to the hosting job, we've rounded up our favorite hosting moments all the way from Ellen DeGeneres's hosting gig in 2001, Conan O'Brien's multiple years on stage, and of course Neil Patrick Harris's unbelievable opening musical number.
Whether the hosts did a great job on stage or performed subpar, there are plenty of YouTube clips and Gifs of those good and bad moments to keep the memories alive for a long, long time.
1. Ellen DeGeneres, 2001
After the 2001 Emmys were canceled and rescheduled twice due to 9/11 and the conflict in Afghanistan, DeGeneres gave a much-needed funny and heartfelt performance as the host of the 53rd Primetime Emmys.
2. Conan O'Brien, 2002 and 2006
O'Brien came in hot as the host of the following year's Emmys, making his first hosting stint a very memorable one—so memorable he came back to host twice more, in 2003 and 2006.
3. Jimmy Fallon, 2010
One year after premiering Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the funnyman hosted the 62nd Emmys to good reviews. Pretty much everyone loves a good Jimmy Fallon sketch right?
4. Jane Lynch, 2011
Lynch was the first woman to host the show, solo, since Ellen in 2005. Her opening musical number was excellent, singing as she traversed through the TV show universe. Highlights included Lynch's flirty moment with Mad Men's Peggy Olsen and the line "it's a world where high school students look roughly 24."
5. Jimmy Kimmel, 2012
Kimmel's hosting stunt was not very widely praised, although his opening skit full of "strong female actresses" had us giggling. The opening monologue however, was a bit cringy, especially when he told the audience, "most of you will be losers." Ouch.
6. Neil Patrick Harris, 2013
NPH hosted his second Emmy Awards in 2013 to rave reviews. The dance numbers, his sarcastic sense of humor, and of course his actual musical talents, brought down the house. Plus, that back-and-forth between him and Amy Poehler and Tina Fey is an Emmy moment for the history books.
7. Seth Meyers, 2014
Poor Seth. His performance as an Emmy host wasn't stellar, but give the guy a break, the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards were broadcast on a Monday. In August.
8. Andy Samberg, 2015
With plenty of slapstick moments and over-the-top impressions, Samberg's performance as the host of the 67th Emmys was definitely a memorable one, and gave us a ton of hilarious GIFable moments.
