Friends' Baby Emma Waited for 2020 to Post the Perfect Throwback Joke

This could be the best long-con pop culture joke ever.

Friends may have been unceremoniously yanked from Netflix, but that isn't keeping the new year from bringing us some delightful throwbacks.

Former Friends star Noelle Sheldon, who played Ross and Rachel's daughter, Emma, took to Instagram with an amazing joke that reaches all the way back into the show's history to work. Only true fans will get this one, and that's what makes it so great.

Sheldon posted a photo of herself holding a Central Perk mug, Photoshopped into the Friends set with a grin on her face.

"Just woke up from the best nap of all time, happy 2020!! (ft. my poorly done photoshop) Hope everyone has an excellent year full of family, friends, and laughter!!" wrote Sheldon, with what could possibly be one of the best long-con jokes of all time.

If you need to bone up on your Friends trivia, here's what's going on. Sheldon is referencing a season 10 episode called "The One With the Cake," where Chandler and Monica miss out on a romantic getaway to attend Emma's birthday party. Ross whips out a video camera to ask the couple to record a birthday message for Emma on her 18th birthday in the future, and Chandler breaks into his signature snark.

"Hi, Emma. It's the year 2020," Chandler said. "Are you still enjoying your nap?"

"We're Aunt Monica and Uncle Chandler, by the way — you may not recognize us because we haven't spoken to your parents in 17 years," Monica added.

Bravo to Sheldon on remembering this line and referencing it now that 2020 has finally rolled around. She had to have been waiting patiently for this day to come to share this clever joke, and we applaud her for it.

As for when you can go back and stream the show to relive this moment, you'll be waiting a while. Friends is no longer available on any streaming services, but you can look forward to it touching down on HBO Max in May.
