With awards season upon us, IMDb searches are up one billion percent(ish).
Many of this year’s top-nominated films haven’t even gone into wide-release and we can hardly blame you if you haven’t yet binged every single TV series recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association—so, if you’re feeling a little in the dark this awards season, just know that you’re not alone.
Many millennial viewers, for instance, are unfamiliar with the work of Golden Globe winner for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama category, Frances McDormand.
The seasoned performer faced off against four worthy fellow nominees: Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Meryl Streep (The Post), and Michelle Williams (All the Money in the World).
But just who is Frances McDormand? Scroll down below for a refresher on the established actress.
She Won for Her Performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
The film, which also won a Globe, follows the no-nonsense Mildred, a mother of two desperate for answers after her daughter is raped and killed in their small southern town.
Mildred rents out billboards (yep, three of 'em) and has the messages call out the local police force (which is led by fellow Globe winner Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson) in the hopes of stirring them to action.
What follows is a surprisingly heartwarming (and at times comical) tale of a mother’s love and the lengths she’ll take to ensure justice is served.
McDormand’s performance is at once commanding and heartbreaking—a true standout for 2017.
This Is Hardly Her First Awards Season
The 60-year-old actress is a Hollywood vet in the truest sense. She made her debut in the Coen Brothers’ Blood Simple. (1984) and has since delivered numerous critically acclaimed performances. McDormand’s been nominated for four Academy Awards, netting one win in 1997 for her role in Fargo (also a Coen Brothers project). In addition to her Oscar, she’s won two Golden Globes, an Emmy, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, an award at Sundance, two Independent Spirit Awards, a Gotham Award, and many, many other accolades.
She’s Married to Joel Coen
The number of Coen Brothers films McDormand has starred in may have something to do with her close bond to Joel Coen, her husband of 33 years.
The show biz pair also has a son, Pedro McDormand Coen, whom they adopted from Paraguay in 1995.
She May Very Well Be the Side-Eye Queen
Don’t mess with Frances.
