Exclusive! Reese Witherspoon's Hairstylist Shares The Secret to Getting Her Polished Bob

At the 2014 Golden Globe Awards, Reese Witherspoon took the carpet in a slightly-shorter crop, and subsequently had the rest of us wanting to follow suit with a similar cut. Once we saw her style take a more low-key route at the release of Drew Barrymore's book, Find It In Everything, our next move was clear, so we quizzed her hairstylist Cervando Maldonado on what to consider, and how to get her sleek look.

"A bob cut like Reese's is usually thought to be more suited for women with straight hair, however, it can complement many different textures and face shapes," said Maldonado, who recommends that those with finer strands to go for one length, and razor the ends for texture. "For wavy and curly textures, your stylist should go through with a thinning shear or razor to take out the bulk if your hair tends to expand -- this will allow your hair to lay closer to the head." If you have an oval or rectangle face shape, opt for a length that hits around your chin or collarbone, while those with rounder faces should aim for a longer cut. "Around the mid-level of the neck to the collarbone looks best," he added. "For Reese, I cut the hair blunt, making the hair shorter in the back and longer in the front."

As for her soft blowout? Maldonado prepped the star's damp strands with a cocktail of Kerastase Volumeactive Mousse ($42; kerastase-usa.com) and Oscar Blandi Volumizing Spray ($19; oscarblandi.com), concentrating on the root area, then rough-dried her hair to add extra movement. "I went in section by section with a medium round boar bristle brush by Ibiza to smooth and dry hair completely," he said. "I let the bangs dry on their own, smoothing just the ends with a small round boar bristle brush for a natural and edgy feel." So as to not disrupt the volume at the crown, he touched up Witherspoon's ends with a flat iron before misting Serge Normant's Dry Shampoo ($25; sergenormant.com) all over to add height. A final veil of L'Oreal Elnett Satin Strong Hold ($15; ulta.com) held the style in place while taming any flyways.
