Last night, Karina Smirnoff and Corbin Bleu pulled off an A+-worthy performance, proving once again that Dancing with The Stars is very much back in session. The dancing duo jived to One Direction’s mega-hit “Kiss You,” while donning high school-inspired costumes, a theme Smirnoff immediately thought of for their performance.

“When we got the song—a very youthful, energetic and fun song—I knew right away this would be the perfect opportunity to channel what put Corbin on the map,” Smirnoff exclusively told The two went for classic-meets-stylish nerd and popular jock looks, paying homage to Bleu’s High School Musical days with their routine, and costumes. Bleu even added in his classic high jump to the dance. (He leaped from the judges’ panel!)

Smirnoff remained true to the character she created—a flirtatious bookworm—by incorporating flattering custom add-ons, like the gold glitter accent on her high-waisted plaid skirt, and her bright red glasses. The dancer finished off her look with ruffles and feathers, “which gave the outfit a soft and feminine feel,” Smirnoff told us.

The partners scored high with the judges, earning a 26/30, making them the first safe couple of the night. Keyshawn Johnson and Sharna Burgess, however, were the first to be eliminated this week, leaving 11 couples in the ballroom.

Tune in next Monday night at 8/7c on ABC for the live results show.
