Swimwear Designer Melissa Odabash Gives Us the Design Details For Pieces Naomi Watts Wore in Diana
In the new biopic Diana, which tells the extraordinary story of the last two years of Princess Diana's life, Naomi Watts tackles the lead role as one of the most famous women in the world -- which includes wearing all of the Princess of Wales' iconic looks, from her famous sheath gowns to her weekend beachwear. In the film, Watts sports swimwear identical to the classic pieces Diana wore during her famous boat trips, and we got the inside scoop from swimwear designer Melissa Odabash on how she recreated the pieces for the film. Odabash, who made more than 35 swimsuits in various colors and patterns for Watts, found inspiration for each piece from old images of Diana in her swimsuits. “The suits bring back Princess Diana’s iconic looks from her boat trips everyone remembers, every image they have of her on the yacht,” Odabash tells InStyle.com. “I wanted [Watts] to look as close as possible to Diana in those pictures, as they were from the last year of her life.” When designing the suits, Odabash studied old images and worked to create patterns almost identical to the ones Diana wore. “They are quite simple cuts, and swimwear design has come so far—for me, it is important to have a swimsuit that really suits the female silhouette, so I combined her original swimsuits with more updated versions of my own,” the designer says. Odabash also had the challenge of making the suits work for Watts. “It was a lot of going back and forth, as it was also about making [Watts] feel comfortable in the designs as well,” says Odabash. “Some [were] more high cut on the leg and scoop backs, as they would have been cut.” If you’re like us, and can’t wait to see the gorgeous designs on Watts, make sure to check out Diana, in theaters today.
