Exclusive: All the “Cheeky” Details of the Gorgeous Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover Girls' Barely-There Swimwear
It's a milestone too large for just one supermodel on the cover; which is why for the iconic Sports Illustrated 50th anniversary swimsuit edition, the mag chose to feature three women on the cover instead. Lily Aldridge, Nina Agdal and Chrissy Teigen have each snagged the title of this year's cover girl, as announced last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “We really, honestly liked each other,” Teigen tells Sports Illustrated of being featured with the other two girls. “Of course you are going to hear that from anybody who does a group shot, but this time it’s true. The connection was natural and the mood was fun.”
On the cover, shot in the Cook Islands, the gorgeous girls are pictured knee-deep in crystal blue waters with their arms around each other, clad in itsy bitsy bikini bottoms, Aldridge and Allen in orange thong numbers, and Teigen in a tiny pink version. And as much of an honor as it is for the models to be chosen for the cover, it's equally as life-changing for the swimwear designers. Those cheeky little bottoms are the work of three designers; Beach Bunny Swimwear, Bettina Bell, and Basta Surf. We got all the details straight from them on their highly buzzed-about designs.
"Neon is back and looks amazing on any skin tone,"Angela Chittenden of Beach Bunny Swimwear, who designed Agdal's bottoms, tells InStyle.com exclusively. "Brazilian "cheeky" bottoms have also been trending so we deciding to add our signature "scrunch" to the back of the suit as well as a very simple embellishment to the hip to add the glamour to a very simple bottom. We will all be seeing a lot of neon, neoprene and 90's styles this summer!" As for working with Agdal, "She is perfect in every way and very easy going," Chittenden says. "I love when a model is just drop dead gorgeous but then the girl next door!
"What an honor to be featured on Chrissy," Bettina Bell told InStyle.com. "I always try to design swimwear and cover ups that make girls feel confident, feminine, and flirty. I thought, 'lets put a heart on the bum to remind all us girls how loved we are!' It truly is a Bettinis original design."
"We experimented with laser cutting our bottoms with ruching details in our first season," said Basta Surf's Samantha August and Emily Ford, who designed Allen's bikini. "An instant hit, this style the Padang Padang is shown on the cover of the 2014 SI swim issue. A Basta brand favorite!"
Neons, heart-centric bums, and laser cut ruching: If this doesn't make you want to take a beach getaway, we don't know what will! The 50th Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition goes live across the web, mobile, tablet and newsstands on February 18th.
