What better way to relax the day before the Emmys than with an afternoon tea. The BAFTA Los Angeles TV Tea party kicked off with its usual sophisticated swagger Saturday at the Boxwood cafe inside of the London Hotel in West Hollywood, Calif., with Brits and non-Brits like Maisie Williams, Laura Carmichael, Emilia Clarke, and more gathering for an event filled with traditional British tea, cocktails, and plenty of conversation to celebrate this year’s nominees.
Game of Thrones stars Clarke and Williams both rocked pink looks to the elegant bash, with the 29-year-old actress hurrying inside to enjoy the festivities in an off-the-shoulder, sheer, lace dress that she paired with snakeskin-printed pumps.
Williams, meanwhile, stunned in a plunging Henry Holland silk minidress emblazoned with stars, and matching Jimmy Choo metallic pumps, and showed off the "07.08.09" tattoo she inked on her arm with co-star Sophie Turner in honor of the day they both landed their roles on the show. Williams, who is nominated for her first Emmy for her role as Arya Stark on GOT, told InStyle she felt “really excited” going into the official Emmy awards, explaining, “Emmy weekend is just the funnest weekend. So, regardless, I’ll go home very very happy.” As for the tea party, the 19-year-old actress told us it was her first time attending the event and was thrilled to be there. “I feel like it’s just a very civilized, lovely atmosphere with loads of people in this industry,” she added.
While it wasn’t the first time Stranger Things star (and fellow Brit) Millie Bobby Brown attended the soiree, the 12-year-old actress admitted this time would be a little different. “I have been here before, and last time I cried on the red carpet,” she said with a laugh. “So, this time, I’m very calm.” Brown, was tea party ready in a printed Burberry dress and Burberry flats complete with a bow, telling us she thought her ensemble was “classic, classy and also very British.”
Meanwhile, Blackish star Yara Shahidi was also excited to get dressed up for the event, especially since this is the first year the Fox show has been nominated for outstanding comedy series. “It’s a tea party and I feel like it’s so right when I put one pinky out and drink my tea,” she said with a laugh, as she showed off her printed Tommy Hilfiger dress complete with an embellished collar, and Tommy Hilfiger shoes. “What’s so cool is that I’m coming this time with a show nomination...it’s really exciting.”
Downton Abbey star Laura Carmichael, who wore a collared, white, lace Orly Kiely dress to the event, was also celebrating her show’s nomination and had a bit of a fangirl moment as she chatted with us before heading inside. “Jeffrey Tambor is standing right there,” she said excitedly, as the Transparent star stepped beside her to do an interview. “I’m trying not to say it too loud,” she said with a laugh, adding that she was “excited” to be at the party.
Inside of the bash, guests munched on scones with cream and strawberry preserves, and a variety of tea sandwiches, including roast beef with horseradish sauce, cucumber, and egg salad and cress. While many of the guests sipped peppermint and English breakfast tea, they also enjoyed champagne, wine, and cocktails from the open bar, including the signature cocktails: the Tanqueray Hibiscus Collins and Ruffino Tuscan sun cocktails made with Ruffino prosecco and Ketel One.
Williams mixed and mingled with friends, while Joanne Froggatt enjoyed a glass of champagne with her husband James Cannon, and her friend Carrie Preston as they chatted in a back room. Melora Hardin shared a laugh with a group of party attendees in an Ingy Paris printed dress and, before the event was over, Allison Janney made a last-minute appearance to celebrate her two Emmy nominations for Mom and Masters of Sex.
