From Elizabeth Banks to Meryl Streep—See the Best Looks from Last Night's Democratic National Convention
Politics aside, the second night of the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on Tuesday was full of inspiring moments—from the party's historic nomination of Hillary Clinton to the red carpet-worthy style of the celebrity speakers.
For her role as host, Hunger Games actress Elizabeth Banks wowed in a knee-grazing Elie Saab creation. The white cocktail dress was covered in round, pearlescent appliques that started at the dress's sheer mesh neckline and increased in number as they reached the end of the flirty skirt. Banks, 42, styled her blone hair in an elegant low chignon and accessorized her look with a stylish pair of gold ear jackets.
Lending their support to Clinton, Ugly Betty star America Ferrera and Lena Dunham took the stage together in coordinating black and white ensembles. Dunham, 30, looked chic in an off-the-shoulder white dress with a thigh-high slit and a subtle empire waist. The Girls star paired the form-fitting number with strappy black heels. A mild magenta lip and a smoky eye brought a hint of drama to her classic look. Beside her, Ferrera stunned in a black sheath dress with white straps and a white hemline that traced the asymmetrical slit at the center of the skirt, while pointy red pumps provided an eye-catching pop of color.
When it came to her look, Oscar-winner Meryl Streep took a decidedly different approach. For her impassioned address, the celebrated actress revisted a one-of-a-kind Catherine Malandrino American flag dress that first turned heads at a 2009 Paris photocall for her movie Doubt. After waiting seven long years for its return to the spotlight, the collared star-spangled number did not disappoint.
In her nontraditional dress, last night Streep reminded the crowd that she, like Clinton, was no stranger to shattering stereotypes.
"What does it take to be the first female anything?" she asked. "It takes grit and it takes grace."
