Elie Tahari may have 40 years of design under his belt, but make no mistake: His anniversary collection, unveiled Tuesday night, is as much about the high-tech present as it is the past. "It's about today's world happening," he told in between greeting guests at the mod, cocktail-esque presentation. From silicon-insert jumpsuits (a favorite of Tahari's) to mesh laser-cut dresses, the designer sought a "Silicon Valley" feel to his clothes. "It's a lot of new materials I haven't seen or used before." And he wasn't the only one taken by the experimentation. "I'm obsessed," rapper Eve (in Elie Tahari) told us. "For myself I can still find that perfect balance between edge and pretty. It's the perfect stuff." Tahari's anniversary celebration kicked off last week when New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared September 4 "Elie Tahari Day." The tribute moved the designer. "I mean if I give back as much as I receive, just a little bit of that ..." he trailed off, taking in the crowd of supporters around him. "It was a happy day."
