Dr. Mindy Lahiri Dressed to Impress on This Week's The Mindy Project
Meeting your boyfriend’s mom for the first time can be awkward, and we bet it would be even more so if she met you and thought you were the cleaning lady. This senario played out in last night’s episode of The Mindy Project when Danny’s mom Annette Castellano (Rhea Perlman) mistakes Dr. Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) for a maid.
However, the awkward encounter didn't dampen Mindy’s determination to make Danny’s mom love her. When Danny (Chris Messina) brings her to Schulman & Associates, Mindy is ready to impress in a Trina Turk diamond-print dress and sparkling BaubleBar earrings. “She knows that Danny’s mom is coming in, and she wants to look professional, so she had a very sweet dress on and a lab coat,” costume designer Salvador Perez tells InStyle. “It was like look, I’m a doctor. I’m not who you thought I was!”
Her dress-to-impress attitude is on full display later in the episode too, when she shows up at Annette’s birthday brunch in an impeccably tailored double-breasted coatdress designed by Perez (above). “It was supposed to do so many different things,” Perez explains about the piece, which need to function both as a comedic prop and a fashion statement. “So instead of buying something, we decided to make [a dress] that could do that.”
For the final scene, Perez put Mindy in another tailored ensemble, but this time he mixed up textures and patterns. “The vest pattern was on a diagonal and the skirt pattern was on a horizontal, so I took one pattern and made it different by mixing the directions,” says Perez, who made the vest and the skirt for the scene (above). He then paired those pieces with a green floral blouse from Equipment and a Joie leather jacket. “Putting the leather jacket over it gave [the outfit] a whole new life,” he adds. We agree!
We’ll be chatting with Perez every week about our favorite looks from The Mindy Project, so be sure to check back in next week! In the meantime, see all of our favorite looks so far this season.
