As Tris Prior in this month’s Divergent (in theaters March 21), Shailene Woodley’s on-screen style is pretty simple: lots of black and gray in wearable outfits perfect for kicking butt in. And when it comes to her off-screen red carpet looks, the actress' preferred style is just as easy and laid-back.

"When I’m myself, I feel confident," Woodley tell us. "I like to be comfortable, so that’s the ideal." Which is why she turns to such designers as Calvin Klein and Jason Wu, whom she praises for their relaxed and flattering designs, a must for Divergent’s whirlwind promotional tour.

As you can imagine, her beauty routine is as equally loose. "When I walk into a party with the least amount of makeup on I feel the most confident and empowered because I’m fully dancing to the beat of my own drum, and that feels good," she says. To achieve a natural glow -- and we do mean natural -- she turns to an unexpected source: fruits and vegetables!

She has used beets as lipstick before, and "you can do blackberries [and] bing cherries, too," she reveals.

Now that’s a red carpet trick we hadn't heard of, but are sure to try!

See how Shailene's look has changed through the years, and be sure to check out her feature with Theo James from our March issue.
