Demi Lovato Said She and Selena Gomez Are "Not Friends" Anymore

Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez were once close friends in their early years as Disney stars, but judging by Lovato's recent comments, they seem to have drifted apart.

In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, Lovato said she was surprised when Gomez praised her in an Instagram story following her Grammys performance.

“When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so it felt …” Lovato told Harper's Bazaar before apparently stopping herself. “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”

Lovato and Gomez met as seven-year-olds when they were on Barney together in 2002, and both graduated onto Disney shows, with Lovato starring in Sonny With a Chance and Gomez appearing in Wizards of Waverly Place.

Earlier this year, Gomez posted an Instagram story with a supportive message for Lovato after she performed onstage for the first time since her 2018 overdose.

"I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational and DESERVED this moment was," she wrote. "Demi I'm so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery."

In 2018, Gomez told Elle she had reached out to Lovato after her overdose, telling the magazine, "All I’m saying is, I reached out personally. I didn’t do a public thing. I didn’t want to. I…I love her. I’ve known her since I was seven. So…it’s…that’s what I’ll say."
