Demi Lovato Encourages Seeking Mental Health Help During the Pandemic

She says it's a sign of strength.

While many people are sheltering at home to flatten the curve and slow the spread of COVID-19, Demi Lovato is addressing a different kind of public health: mental well-being. Lovato announced that she's helping launch The Mental Health Fund and, thus far, has already managed to raise more than $200 for mental health. But in addition to setting up the fund, she encouraged anyone and everyone to seek help if they need it, especially since many people feel especially isolated and alone as they quarantine.

"It’s so important that people have these lines because sometimes you feel really alone and you don’t know where to turn or who to talk to," Lovato told People of her initiative. "You’re afraid that these thoughts you're having are too dark, and you need guidance. That's where this comes in. It can provide help to people who are struggling."

Lovato is encouraging anyone dealing with anxiety, depression, substance abuse, or other mental health challenges to reach out to the Mental Health Fund, via text or phone calls. There are lines for the U.S., Canada, Ireland, and the U.K. to connect callers to counselors.

"Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It's a sign of strength. Oftentimes, our society tells us that if we ask for help, we are weak," she adds. "But the strongest thing someone can do is take that first step in getting help, whatever shape or form that is."

Lovato shared that she's currently social distancing with new boyfriend Max Ehrich, but also remaining in touch with friends, family, and her team of treatment experts. She encouraged her followers to experiment with new things, such as hobbies and physical activity to pass the time.

"Every time I go on my dog walks, I take pictures of stuff in nature. I was just talking to a friend yesterday who’s a photographer and I was like, 'I think I'm starting to really like photography!'" she added. "That might be a new hobby for me."
