Earlier today, a Twitter account posing as BBC News tweeted “BREAKING: Daniel Radcliffe tests positive for coronavirus. The actor is said to be the first famous person to be publicly confirmed,” along with a link that led back to the BBC’s landing page.

The tweet, which came from an unverified account with 126 followers, was shared hundreds of times before it was removed. The account has since been suspended.

Radcliffe’s team confirmed to InStyle that the news was “Not true. Fake,” but many still fell for it.

And as with any great internet hoax, the jokes are slowly restoring our faith in humanity:

Coronavirus panic is everywhere, so it isn’t exactly surprising that someone would prey on our collective anxiety. As far as we know, celebrity-kind is still alive and well and wealthy.
